Trip Stats

The total trip distance was 5085 miles in just over three weeks.

Going up the west coast via the crinkly bits was 2914 miles to Nordkapp, and 2171 miles back via the more direct Finland / Sweden route.

Used 32 tanks of fuel (often a partial fill), a total of 410 litres (90 gallons), with an average of 56 mpg. The daily average varied a lot, autobahn riding using much more than optimum Norwegian cruising.

The bike's Michelin Road 5 tyres seemed to last (I was worried they might wear out), as I have no idea what typical modern tyre wear rates are (depends on tyre compound, the rear is dual compound). They had 2000 miles on them prior to the trip and now the front looks more worn than the rear, but not down to the wear marks yet. As modern tyres have such a rounded profile the rear tends to square off if you do lots of straight line riding, which tends to upset the handling, so often you replace them early if this is the case.

Noticed one of the exhaust hanger tie bolts is missing. I think this fell out after the massive roadworks section with all its bumps/vibration. The bolt isn't really a critical one so I just kept an eye on the bracket, duct tape at the ready, but not needed.

I went through a small can of chain lube (should have taken two of the small cans), but need to inspect the state of the chain and sprockets once I've cleaned everything up, in theory they should be OK as the bike has only done 12,000 miles (now).

The bike generally ran well, but the throttle pickup in low gears in really hot temperatures used to get a bit ragged.
