Nordkapp! (North Cape)

After 2914 miles (4691 km) I've finally reached Nordkapp (North Cape) the furthest point north in Europe you can get on the road network. From the Arctic Circle to Nordkapp was an additional 600 miles. At latitude 71°10'21N it is as far north as the top of Alaska, and further north than the Russian northern port of Murmansk.

It was an overcast day with a westerly wind with ambient of 5 C. The 100 miles to Nordkapp is up the east coast so most of the time I was shielded from the wind. Nearing Nordkapp the temperature dropped to 2 C.

The globe monument on the 307 m cliff is the iconic photo of Nordkapp.

Closeup of the globe.

There is a large visitor centre to cater for the coach loads of tourists (I'm a traveller, not a tourist!).

I think that really is a radar on top of the building, there are several buildings on the coast all with radome on top.

There are several long tunnels on the route, unusually with automatic tunnel doors that are used to stop the inside of the tunnel freezing. In the summer they remain open, but in the winter when a vehicle approaches they will automatically open.
